Choosing food packaging: five questions before ordering
A practical food-packaging brief covering product characteristics, filling, storage, format and the details needed for a quotation.
1. What does the product need?
Start with the contents: powder, granules, pieces or liquid, including oil, distinctive aromas or sharp edges. State the fill weight and intended shelf life. CEFLEX notes that applications have different functional needs, such as gas or moisture barriers. Capture those needs before discussing the film structure.
2. How will it be packed and stored?
Explain whether packing is manual or automated, the condition of the product during filling and how it will be stored. Identify any heating or cold-storage stage for technical discussion. Evaluate shelf life with the actual product and process rather than inferring it from a material name.
3. Premade pouches or rollstock?
For premade pouches, agree width, height, gusset and opening format. For rollstock, share reel specifications and packing-machine information. Discuss shelf presentation too: a standing pouch, a portion pack and a pack opened repeatedly may call for different choices.
4–5. How will samples and quotations be compared?
Agree sample checks, artwork and acceptance criteria before production. Compare quotations on the same specification, quantity and delivery scope, with cylinder charges and other costs identified separately.
